Two weekends ago I attended the Yiddish Conference in La Jolla
California and met terrific people.

I am a new member to this list. My father came from Czernowitz, I am
enclosing some information I have about him. My father passed away in
1959. I will be in Israel in January. If anyone had relatives who knew
him, I would like to talk to them.

My father Yosef Gruenberg was born in 1911 in Rarancze near Sadagora,
which is a few miles northeast of Czernowitz. His family moved to
Czernowitz after WWI.
In Czernowitz, father studied electrical engineering at King Karl
University. Father was a member of Emunah, a Jewish and Zionist
college fraternity in his university. The members were a very
close-knit group, and supported each other in numerous occasions.

To avoid conscription into the Romanian army father managed to leave
Romania. In 1936 a relative of his and Mr. Gottlieb, an Emunah
fraternity brother secured father a student visa for Palestine.

Some members of Emunah arrived in Palestine the 1920th and 1930th.
Those who became established helped the new comers. Other Emunah
members came to Palestine in 1934 as tourists to watch or participate
in the Maccabi games. Some invested in real estate. Those who survived
the war, and came to Israel had properties waiting for them. When the
state was established and many members made aliya, they kept their
ties. The friendship was akin to a family. They helped each other in
every aspect. My father did similar things for any Emunah member and
his family. When he heard that an Emunah member and his family were on
their way to Israel he used to meet them at the port in Haifa.
Occasionally he brought them to our home for a day or two, until they
had a place to live. Unknown to my mother or to us he also helped them
monetarily. This was revealed to us at my father eulogy. He literally
put money in their pockets and helped them anyway he could.

Father was an "organization" man. He organized his Emunah friends for
monthly meetings at various locations. When I was as old as twelve I
was recruited to address invitations to such meetings. Those talks and
lectures were held in German.

In Israel he changed his last name to Gar'in. (Seed in Hebrew; he
wanted to retain the G, R, N, sounds)

I have in my possession my father's symbols of the Emunah association.
