Reading the Newspaper clips, reminded me of the following true story.
Yiddish speakers being harassed by the authorities

The 3 birthdays of Jacob

Jacob was born in Czernowitz, but has never lived there.
His family lived in a small village near Hliboka, about 35Km from
Czernowitz.
They were very poor; his father was the Shames of the small synagogue there.
When time came for his mother to give birth his father hired a horse and
buggy to take them to a hospital in Czernowitz.
Jacob was born on the 25 of April. When his father went to register the
birth, he only spoke Yiddish and the registrar told him that he will
have to register Jacob at the village where he lives. When he arrived at
his village and went to the town hall to register Jacob the clerk told
his father to return to Czernowitz, and register him there as Jacob was
born in Czernowitz. By this time his father ran out of money and it
took another month till he got enough for the horse and buggy. A month
later he took Jacob and his mother and went back to Czernowitz.
This time the registrar told him that he cannot give him a birth
certificate for the 25 of April as in the archive book there is no place
for that date, so he gave him a birth certificate for the 10 of June.
Years later, Jacob and his family immigrated to the US. When they
arrived at the US immigration, they did not know that in the US you
write the month first and then the day, they wrote 10/06/1938 (10 June,
1938) and in America it is October 6, 1938.
In all of Jacobs American documents his birthday is listed as October 6,
1938.
