Our sports teacher was Stanger, he was also a party apparatchik and member
of the
 town education board.
He also had musical ambitions ,he organized a choir and an orchestra and
he conducted
with the allure of a real Toscanini. I played fiddle in the orchestre.
All this in the framework of the pioneer movement.
We sang songs in Russian that we did not understand and marched on the
streets of Cz.
singing, people came to see us march and applauded.
The songs where the Soviet patriotic songs ( Dunayewsky) and the most
popular was:
Pesnia o Rodine - Song of the homeland:
Shiroka strana moya rodnaya - Wide is my native land,
Mnogo w ney lesov pole i rek - It has many woods, fields and rivers
Ya drugoy takoy strane ne znayu - I do not know another land like this,
Gde tak volno dyshet chelovek - Where the man breathes so free.

The last line we used to sing in Yiddish ,to reflect our real
feelings, it went:
" Wi der Mentsch ligt asoy tif in Dreck !" Where the man lies so deep
in muck.
If somebody would report this ,we would be sent to the fields and
rivers - far away.
Here is a link to the song. BTW Dunayewsky ,the composer, was Jewish.

  You may sing along,
