It all happened in the thirties. I remember being at a game with my father,
it was the local derby, Maccabi was playing the Romanian club Dragos Voda.
After a first half that ended in a tie, Dragos Voda went ahead and won 2:1. I
remember distinctly that my father and many other Jews had tears in their eyes.
It could be that it was the game that barred their advancing to Division A.
One of the Maccabi players a certain Hoefling, played for Maccabi Bucharest
in the mid forties. That team later became Ciocanul and played in Division A.
After the communist takeover in 1948, the team was "disbanded" and renamed
Dinamo, it's sponsor now was the Interior Ministry (read Secret Police etc.).
In Czenowitz there were quite a few "ethnic" teams, the German team "Jahn",
the Polish "Wawel" and the Ukrainian "Dovbus", and a couple of other Jewish
teams, obviously all these teams disappeared when the Soviets marched in.

Best of luck , Bobby
