My twopennyworth on the question of the wording of the plaque.
Ideally, the wording should be distinguished, concise, and to the point. Of
the suggestions offered so far, I feel that Mimi's and Berti's best achieve
this, but that some further improvement is possible.
I suggest the following.
DR TRAIAN POPOVICH
MAYOR OF THIS CITY (1941-1942)
LIVED HERE.
HE SAVED 19600 JEWS
FROM DEPORTATION TO TRANSNISTRIA
AND PROBABLE DEATH.
IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE.
The arrangement of the first three lines is modelled on the standard wording
of the blue plaques erected on the houses of famous people in London. It
concentrates attention on the name, which can be engraved in larger
characters.
Including the dates of his mayoralty instead of his birth and death dates
provides the necessary wartime background, while keeping it concise. (These
dates should be checked.)
Personally I do not feel that it is necessary to explain from whom the
grateful remembrance is forthcoming. This allows the wording to be more
concise, and thereby leave a stronger impression. However if it is
generally felt that the additional wording should be included, I like Berti'
s phrase: "FROM THOSE HE SAVED, THEIR DESCENDANTS AND ALL WHO CARE".
