Dear Mimi and List members,

I did feel that my suggestion for the wording had certain advantages,
however the vote was for Mimi's wording, so that is fine by me.

I am happy with Mimi's suggested wording, reproduced in her 21 May email:

HERE LIVED TRAIAN POPOVICI 1892-1946
IN 1941, AS MAYOR OF CZERNOWITZ,
HE SAVED 19600 JEWS FROM DEPORTATION
TO TRANSNISTRIA AND PROBABLE DEATH.
IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE,
 FROM THE JEWS OF CZERNOWITZ.

However, I am not happy with the changes proposed since then.

I respectfully disagree with Gary that JEWS is preferable to THE JEWS in the
last line. What exactly is the significance of "The Jews", as opposed to
"Jews", sounds to me rather like the arcane discussions on the number of
plagues in the Hagadah. THE JEWS reads well, but JEWS on its own reads
awkwardly and leaves the reader wondering what this curious wording means.

The revised wording in Mimi's 23 May email:
REMEMBERED IN ETERNAL GRATITUDE
CZERNOWITZ JEWS
strikes me as very peculiar wording to have on a plaque. It does not read
well.

Please, Mimi, stick with your original suggestion! That is after all what
was voted on.

Secondly, I feel strongly that MAYOR OF CZERNOWITZ should NOT be replaced by
MAYOR OF CERNAUTI in the English wording. My mother Erica strongly agrees
with me. We feel this for two reasons. First, the Jewish community felt
more Austrian than Romanian. The second reason is of practical importance.
The English wording is presumably intended for non-Ukrainian and
non-Romanian visitors to the city. Many or most of these visitors will
understand "Czernowitz". But many present-day non-Romanian and non-Jewish
visitors might not know that the town was ever called "Cernauti".

So please Mimi, stick with your original wording. (If you need to drop the
last line from considerations of space, that would be fine by me.)

Mimi, re your request for a Ukrainian keyboard, you can find an on-line one
at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/paulGor/screen_e.htm
This is very easy to use. Just click "Ukrainian" under Layout.

Best regards to all,

David
