Chaim ben Shlomo Tirer (R. Chaim Czernowitzer) was born in 1760 (1750
in some sources) in a village near Buczacz. He was a student of R. Zvi
Hirsh ben Yakov Karo and a close friend of R. Avrom Dovid ben Asher
Anshel Buczacz (both prominent talmudic scholars). He also studied
with R.Yechiel Michael of Zlochev, a disciple of Baal Shem Tov.
R.Chaim Tirer lived in Czernowitz from 1789 till 1807, where he was
the town rabbi and wrote some of his major works. He also lived in
several other places, including Mogilev and Kishinev, before moving to
Tzfat in 1813 or 1814. He died in Tzfat several years later (the
inscription on his tombstone reads 7 Kislev 5578 (1817), but some
sources indicate that he may have died in 1815 or 1816).
A comprehensive study of R.Chaim Czernowitzer works was published recently:
Ron Wacks, "The Secret of Unity: Unifications in the Kabbalistic and
Hasidic Thought of R. Hayyim ben Solomon Tyrer of Czernowitz", Los
Angeles: Cherub Press, 2006. ISBN 1-93379-04-09,320 p., in Hebrew.
