I have now been able to verify, by reading Radu Ioanid's book "The Holocaust
in Romania" that the massacre in the environs of Zaharesti village took
place on July 1, 1940. But according to Radu Ioanid, the number of Jewish
persons murdered was 36 and not 16, as is engraved on the commemorative
stone. Possibly 16 of these were from the village of Zaharesti, but Jewish
people from nearby villages were included in the massacre.
Does anyone know whether Valeriu Carp was ever punished for the crimes he
committed?
