Dear Abraham,
Though there are risks in trying to access information that was stored in my
REAL memory about seventy-six years ago, I can distinctly recall that the
Ostjuedische Zeitung edited by Dr. Mayer Ebner was one of the printed
materials I used to exercise my newly acquired reading skill. Later, when I
actually understood what Dr. Ebner was writing, I admired his beautiful
style and his gift to highlight the historical significance of past events
for the present. Thus, I recall an article that Dr. Ebner (who had been
elected to the Romanian Senate) wrote during the mid-thirties on the
occasion of the anniversary of the abdication of the last Emperor of the
Austro-Hungarian monarchy. After a careful but skillful introduction
intended to dispel any doubts about the loyalty of the Bukovinean Jews to
their new fatherland, Dr. Mayer described the many achievements made
possible by the generally tolerant and progressive policies of the Austrian
monarchy.
After many decades of living through monumental events, I found myself in
the hall in Tel-Aviv where in 1948 Israel's independence was proclaimed. In
a photograph of those present was Dr. Mayer Ebner, the only one who had also
been a delegate to the first Zionist Congress in Basel. Suddenly, I saw the
link between myself - an American visitor, the Jews of Czernowitz, the
travails of my father's generation of Zionists, the messianic dreams of
countless earlier generations and this Altneuland!
Thank you for recalling a great Landsmann.
Regards,
Fred Schneider
