[Cz-L] many thanks

Many heartfelt thanks to Alfred, Berti, Arthur and Edgar who put
their shoulders to the wheel and helped to "find" my family's
Czernowitz streets, with all the name changes and with fabulous
photos. For those of us who have never lived or yet visited
Czernowitz in person, it truly "takes a village" to make our family
history come to life.
The photos that Arthur sent paint quite a vivid, honest and rather
painful picture of the disparities between old and new (or recently
reconstructed) parts of the city, and also between the central city
and the Jewish quarter even today. One might imagine that in America
and in some other parts of Europe the Jewish Quarter might be
preserved as a historical attraction (though of course not all Jews
would embrace this idea), complete with people dressed in old
costumes and giving talks about the culture as it once existed, as in
the New York Tenements museum. But that would require widely and
respectfully acknowledging that the culture and its people did exist
and it would require a wish to perpetuate their memory and history --
all of it. Maybe some day, even in Czernowitz....! The Jewish Museum
and the Popovici plaque, and the efforts to restore the cemetery, are
major steps toward recognition.
