Dear All,
Soviets , Ukrainean, Rumanians, Austrian, all hated Jews .
I was too young to live under Austrian rule but their influence prevailed
long
after they left.
They built the city, almost all the houses ,public buildings churches
synagogues
were from their period.
Did the Austrians love Jews ? They were catholics and mostly
antisemites.
The most notorious Nazis were Austrians.
But in their period there was the French revolution and the 1848 Spring
of Nations
and people woke up and demanded human rights. The Jews took advantage of
this : Education - the best Universities of Europe were opened to them
,Vienna ,Prague
Trade: Almost all the shops of Cz were Jewish, and much more.
Jews paid back in loyalty ,fought the Habsburg wars ,were even nobled
as Ritters.
Ritter( Knight) von Salomon Rabinowitch.
Yes , under Franz Joseph I , the jews of Czernowitz had their best
time in history.
