The religious aspect of the cemetery :
( First , I am not religious).
The cemetery was called " Dus Heilige Ort "( Holy place ) by all people ,
religious or not.
Because it served as a passage from our world to Heaven.
This elementary truth was believed by all Jews , religious or not.
Others waited for Meshiah.
As to whom the cemetery belongs ? I understand that it now belongs to the
Jewish Community,
this is another way of putting it that the locals are not going to spend
a penny in recovering
the cemetery. Like passing a hot potato.
Rabbi Zweckers offer to use his facillity is meant to spare us the
trouble of establishing
a non-profit org. which is time-robbing.
We can take it or not.
All we want is the cemetery cleaned ,so that all graves are
accessible by all.

Subject: [Cz-L] Czernowitz Cemetery
Dear Czernowitzers,
Encouraged by Mimi Taylor and her amazing and successful dedication for the
Traian Popovici Project, I would like to express my gratitude and confidence
for her activities related to the rehabilitation of the Czernowitz Cemetery.
In this context, I would like to point out as follows:
I'm trying to follow the discussion within our forum quite accurately.
Mimi's approach is from my point of view very promising, but I strongly
believe, that there is no alternative except forming a
non-profit-organization based in Ukraine, even if this will cause some
additional costs and/or administrative efforts. With due respect for
religious sentiments, please note that the cemetery represents an integral
part of Czernowitz and is not exterritorial. Based on my own family history,
my knowledge of the region and numerous contacts with local residents, most
of the Jews of Bukovina and especially those of Czernowitz were at all times
moderate religious, if not secular. In any case, religion didn't play a
predominant role in their daily life. Therefore I would warmly recommend
that our rehabiltation project should definitely be laicist and in
coordination with local authorities. At the same time the
non-profit-organization should be open and attractive for each and evry
individual and organization - religious or not - willing to support the
sustainable rehabilitation of the cemetery.
I am pleased to promote such a task force or non-profit-organization in
order to achieve this ambitious goal!
