[Cz-L] Czernowitz Cemetery

Dear Czernowitzers,

Encouraged by Mimi Taylor and her amazing and successful dedication for the=
 Traian Popovici Project, I would like to express my gratitude and confidenc=
e for her activities related to the rehabilitation of the Czernowitz Cemeter=
y. In this context, I would like to point out as follows:

I'm trying to follow the discussion within our forum quite accurately. Mimi=
's approach is from my point of view very promising, but I strongly believe,=
 that there is no alternative except forming a non-profit-organization based=
 in Ukraine, even if this will cause some additional costs and/or administra=
tive efforts. With due respect for religious sentiments, please note that th=
e cemetery represents an integral part of Czernowitz and is not exterritoria=
l. Based on my own family history, my knowledge of the region and numerous c=
ontacts with local residents, most of the Jews of Bukovina and especially th=
ose of Czernowitz were at all times moderate religious, if not secular. In a=
ny case, religion didn't play a predominant role in their daily life. Theref=
ore I would warmly recommend that our rehabiltation project should definitel=
y be laicist and in coordination with local authorities. At the same time th=
e non-profit-organization should be open and attractive for each and evry in=
dividual and organization - religious or not - willing to support the sustai=
nable rehabilitation of the cemetery.

I am pleased to promote such a task force or non-profit-organization in ord=
er to achieve this ambitious goal!
