According to Hardy the Czernowitz city coat of arms which includes 3 yellow
six-pointed stars, dates back to 1861,the year in which Bukovina achieved
the status of an autonomous duchy. This leads me to believe that it is quite
likely that the 3 stars where meant to be stars of David - Magen David and
not just a geometric ornament.
By 1861 the city had a large Jewish population which was also quite
influential and in view of the prominent role the star of David plays in
Jewish iconography, it is most unlikely that three six-pointed stars would
have been on the city coat of arms just as ornaments.
