Hardy: How much off can I be ?

Totally !!!

A tree would need some air around itself in order to develop freely. With a
diameter of 5 cm the next tree would be not nearer than 25 cm from center to
center tree, and the ratio of surrounding to tree surface around 25 to 1.
Make some allowance though for branches etc. still your calculations are
some 2000% too high.
