Dear Gabriele,

I do remember the Rote Bubi and comply with your challenge by adding some
trivia. He was a local character (eine Gestalt in Czernowitz) whose
principal source of income was accosting someone at a soccer match at the
Maccabi Field with the exclamation: "Hoch Maccabi, gib mir fuenf Lei!" If he
got his 5 Lei, he would repeat the Hoch Maccabi and look for his next
target. If he didn't get anything, he would exclaim "Hoch Jahn, or hoch
Dragos Voda, etc." plus some unquotable and move on. I ran into him in the
Ghetto; he wore a fancy wintercoat, hat, and decent shoes. Apparently,
someone decided that they better give that stuff to Bubi than leave it
behind in their apartment. Bubi noticed that I was wearing leather gloves
(which I also didn't want to leave behind) so he condescendingly called me a
Hochstappler.
