I do not remember den roten Bubi but I remember another odd character
who used to hang around the Ringplatz we called him Eneh Meneh\
One Purim he went around schnoren and collected over 100 lei.
Next day he went around begging, I am getting married I earn over
100 lei a day

Subject: [Cz-L] More memories

My mother remembers "der rote Bubi" Does anyone else? He was an "armer
Schlucker" - It is German armer -poor, Schlucker - schlucken in German
means to swallow why armer, maybe because a poor man when he gets
something to eat, would swallow it down quickly- can't think of another
meaning but would welcome suggestions. He was really poor.
Mother was a very active sportswoman in her youth, and was gatekeeper
(basketball), at the Maccabi sportsclub. Der Rote Bubi usually walked
around the Ringplatz, and whenever her saw my mother he would shout
"Hoch die Torin!", which meant something like hail, or long live the
gatekeeper.
My mother and others laughed, since the German word " Tor" also means
crazy, mad.
She cannot remember where he died, probably in Transnistria.
Does anyone else know more about him?
Gabriele
