Dear Hardy,

I clearly understand your point, which is that the man in the photo had more important things to be concerned with, such as survival from the Rumanian/Nazi holocaust.

My question was in no way meant to lessen or denigrate that person's concern. In fact, I was simply trying to get a better understanding, a feel if you will, for the daily life there, more so than being confined as to what was actually taking place there politically at the time the photo was taken. I really paid no attention to the the fact that the photo was taken in 1941. Patching pants was around in CZ long before even the Rumanians came on the scene. Why a square patch rather than a round one? Is a square patch easier to make than a round one? Why a patch at all as opposed to a weave? Did the pants of the fellow in the picture develop a hole before 1941, before the Nazi impetus, where perhaps he wore those pants for a time, maybe years, before survival from the Nazi's became a concerned reality for him? If so, was the social climate in CZ prior to 1941 based on class, i.e. how much money a person had, such that it would be shameful to wear pants with a patch? That is what was behind my question.

You are a very imtelligent and knowledgeable person. You have lived in CZ, have seen and done it all. That is why I asked the question of you.

Frankly I was hoping for an answer from you that would address the question, rather than the answer you provided.

I realize that the terrible events in Bukovina during the early 1940's has negatively impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of others, yourself included, as is always evident in your writings. I wish there were a way to ease your pain. May the Lord grant you peace, beginning with this New Year.

Best regards,
Gary Rogovin
