Yetka Druk/Meiselman
Dear Genners,
I am trying to find any information at all on my Mother -in-law and her family.
Yetka Druk Known to us a Yehudit or to us as Judy Jurblum nee Druk was
born in KUTY.
This is what she told me and in her words;
My grandfather and Uncle were in the timber business and quite well
off. My father was a salesman and travelled a lot to the mountains. He
was Mendle Druk and my Mother Belcha Berta Meiselman. My siblings were
Josephine/Fini Naphtali/Tuli and Joseph/Yossi.
When the Germans came my family were hiding in a bunker where we were
caught and sent to a ghetto. Where it was I am not sure. They escaped
from the ghetto and went back home.
My parents realised it was too dangerous so they decided to escape.
My mother had a gentile friend who worked with a gang smuggling Jews
across the river to Czernowitz Romania. All you had to do was cross
the river but it was so dangerous you could not do it on your own.
There were Romanian Patrols on the Romanian side and German patrols on
our side.
My mother paid this friend (who's son went to school with my brother)
half of what he should receive as she became very distrustful knowing
that children were being killed, and when he delivered me to my Aunt I
gave him a pass word and he would receive the rest when he returned to
my home. My brother Naphtali followed a few days later but after a
week in Czernowitz he was caught and sent back. At that time they
shot people for escaping. I think they shot him.
I lived with my Aunt for two years and then she thought someone saw
me so she put me in an Orphanage with other Jewish Kids. We were kept
separate from the non Jewish children as it was too dangerous for them
to know we were there. Then the orphanage could not keep us any longer
as it was too dangerous and I was living day to day in hiding with
some other people. I was 14 or 15 and I was sent out to look for food.
The Hagganah had a list of Jewish children they found me and had to
smuggle me from Czernowitz to Bucharest as Czernowitz belonged to the
Germans.
The Hagganah found where I was and in groups of six they put us on a
train from Czernowitz to Bucharest. My head was wrapped in a bandage
around my chin to pretend I had a tooth ache as I did not speak the
language and they did not want me to give them away. I finally arrived
in Genoa where there were two ships going to Palestine. The first had
families who had also escaped from Kuty and I missed that boat. I was
put on the second with one family also from Kuty. I watched the
Germans sink the first boat with all the people I knew. I was
devastated.
This was Judy's story shortened of course. She did not give me her
Aunts name but did mention at one stage that Judy called herself
another name in Czernowitz or Bucharest so she did not sound Jewish
but she could not remember the name. She also said that one of the
boys in the convent with her escaped and they met in Israel.
If any of this sounds familiar to you I would appreciate some feed
back or any specific details you may be able to add would be great. I
am not sure as to how accurate Judy was as she said that it was 60
years ago and hard to remember.
Judy passed away last year and I am desperately trying to find any of
the information on her family. She was the only survivor of her entire
extended family who were living in Poland at that time. My Husband and
his sister are the only surviving family from all the Druks and
Maiselmans except for one line of cousins from the Maiselmans who left
Poland before the war. They would appreciate any information.
Could you contact me directly.
