Hi all! For the non-germanspeakers...a mostapfel is a cider apple. I suspect that the Czernowitzers used something like cider and semi-marinated apples in it.While cider in England is quite alcoholic in most parts of Europe it is basically apple juice..at least I think so! Cornel

In response to Fred Weisinger, I do remember very well the Mostaepfel
. (I
think that this is the correct name, with one short o) and the "Kwass"
the
liquid in which they were kept in a bucket, and sold as a cold drink
in the
warm summer days. I have no idea how they prepared them, I do not
remember
that someone made them at home, like other preserved fruits and
vegetables
like povidla, syrup from rose petals, "Sauerkraut," etc..
