Dear Ilana,

I noted your recent e-message in which you mention an "Ordnungsdienst"
(Jewish Police) in the Romanian-administered Czernowitz and that Mr. Lehr
was head of that organization. I spent that entire period in Czernowitz and
I do not recall the existence of a Jewish Police or Ordnungsdienst there. I
suggest you check the source of your information since an unsavory
connotation is generally attached to these organizations that existed in
many ghettos and camps. Mr. Lehr was a respected industrialist in Cz., owner
of a large soap factory. He was appointed in 1943 as Head of the Jewish
Community by the governor's office, replacing Judge Plitter. At that point
in time the Romanians were aware of the hopeless outlook for the Germans and
their allies and they tried to find a way out. This was a fortunate turn for
the Jews in Cz. I did not know Mr. Lehr personally, but do recall that
people spoke favorably about him.

Alfred Schneider
