Hi Mimi...Eine alte Schachtel was simply an old woman. I do not remember it
being used in a past-related derogatory way. It could also be used in a nice
way ,as in "Na Ja,die ist doch 'ne nette alte Schachtel" ie she is a nice
old duck!
Also..among my pics on our site is one of my grandmother standing on our
balcony, and I very vividly remember lying on the concrete and looking over
the side at 2 German soldiers frantically trying to get what I think was a
Kuebelwagen going. They succeeded and roared off up the road..at which point
2 things happened...a Russian tank came round the corner and my mother
grabbed me and dragged me inside with some interesting comments about my
intelligence. Cornel

Thank you Berti, Dana, Fred and all friends for searching the net for me and
the books I remember.
The beginning of the poem Dana and Berti quotes is exactly what I remember.
It means:

It was dark, the moon shone brightly,
Snow lay on the green plain.
As a carriage lightning fast, slowly round the corner drove.
Inside sat standing people, mutely in conversation immersed,
As a dead shot rabbit on the sand bank skated.

The rest of the poem does not sound familiar and I am sure that when I was
seven years old, my parents would not have allowed me to read about
³eine alte Schachtel². (an old woman with a less than spotless past).

I am lucky to have access to the Indiana University fantastic library and
later today or tomorrow, I will be searching for these books in the stacks.

Mimi
