Dear All
 1. About the date the Russians returned. I have a document stating the fact
that we left Transnistria on March-18-1944 on a train of retreating Romanian
and German army (it's a long story) and arriving in Czernowitz on the next
day March-19-1944. I definitely remember that on our way from the train
station to the upper town the streets were almost deserted. I know that it
took a week or more till life became more or less normal. I was in a bad
condition (malnutrition) during that period. My mother who was desperate
because the town seemed to be deserted had to break-in a pharmacy to get
some medication.
2. About the snow. The winters were (maybe still are) quite harsh in that
part of the world and the snowfall was very heavy. If you lived in a
one-story house you could wake-up in the morning with the snow up to the
windows and the exit doors blocked. On a child living in a well-heated
house the sight cast a magic spell. I could sit for hours watching through
the frost-star covered window the snow fall down . From time to time a
sleigh drawn by one or a pair would pass by but otherwise it was serenity
all around. Till this day when old timers meet there is always somebody who
comes up with a story about the snow. Regretfully not all are pleasant.
Wish you all a Happy 2010 New Year
Yosef Eshet, Raanana, Israel
