Dear all,
To read your sad memories, softened by the passing of years, it is
almost as if one had been there, without feeling the fear and terror at
first hand.
It also makes one miss the years of your youth, when Czernowitz was a
beautiful place to grow up in, surrounded by gentle fields and mountains.
What cornucopia of memories, sharing them, is a great treasure for our
Ehpes as well.
I see some parallell to my youth in Bucharest, but it was post-war and
things were of course much different. I do remember the boys playing
football with buttons or with a ball made of cloth, incredible
conditions compared to our pampered youth of today. However, it did
develop creativity and phantasy.
I also remember being afraid of the policeman standing sometimes at the
corner of the street, looking at the passers-by. Afraid, without reason.
Maybe instinctively, because of my parents being wary of uniforms.
By the way, Mimi, it is Frau HOLLE who shakes the pillow out of the
window and then it snows on earth. This is from the Grimm stories. Maybe
you had another
book based on Grimm. In my childhood in bucharest I only had Grimm's
stories in the Gothic alphabet - I had to struggle with the letters, but
it was worth it.
By the way, Berlin is now covered in snow, dreamy, white and clean.
Frau Holle has been busy.
A happy New Year 2010 to all of the List members.
Gabriele
