Dear Steven , congratulations for the acceptance to the AHO . You surely
deserve it.
As to the date of the Czernowitz Ghetto discontinuing I dont think there
will be an accurate date to this.
While the establishment was well proclaimed ( "We, G. Calotescu
,Governor of Bukovina...
on October 11, 1941) the dismantling was a very low- key affair.
By January 1942 the Popovici exempted had returned home (if the houses
were not occupied)
the rest were already deported .
We returned in January :the gates were still there and
the Popovici authoriztion checked. But soon the barriers were dismanted
and there was no more Ghetto .
All this was done very low-key somewhere in February or March.

There was no reason for putting up a Ghetto to begin with, the
deportations could have been made from the original homes.

But the Germans demanded the Ghetto as the German General insisted
that
the Jewish hostile
     population endangered the Wehrmacht's rear.
In general the Ghetto was a big nuisance, since over 10,000 non- jews
lived there and they had freedom of trafic.

Can somebody can produce any documentation on the event ?
     Hardy
