While I have no documents to prove exactly when the ghetto was abolished
and quite possibly there was no formal closing of the ghetto, I remember
that when we left the ghetto and moved in with friends of my family outside
the ghetto, the winter had just started, there was only occasional snow,
which would have been normal for early or mid December. I also remember,
that years later, my mother told me that we were in the ghetto 9 weeks, till
they closed the ghetto. Apparently, those who had found jobs working for
Romanians and had a place to live, could leave the ghetto earlier.
The Romanian who had been given my grandparents' factory, needed my father
to run it, but it took some time for him to obtain the necessary papers and
for a short time, we actually lived with him in his apartment, until an
order was issued, that Romanians hiding Jews, would be deported or shot.
Between mid November 1941 and June 7, 1942, there were no deportations
from Czernowitz to Transnistria. I have a number of documents issued on
March 5th 1942 showing that my parents had registered the address at which
they lived at the time. It was outside the ghetto. Then in the summer of
1942 the deportations resumed and the military authorities searched for Jews
who did not have Calotescu authorizations and if they found any, deported
them. My family and I hid both times and we were lucky not to be found.
