Dear Irene, dear friends,

Thank you first of all for your kind appreciation for the release of the Czernowitz Directory for the year 1936. On the other hand, some of you made the point, that the editorial quality of the directory is generally low. Please remember the statement in my circular mail dated 18.02.10:

"We have done our utmost to deliver an accurate piece of work, but please consider that the Romanization of Bukovina, which took place during the interwar period of the 20th century, had a very negative impact on the accuracy of the directory. An incredible number of typing errors, dozens of variants for the same name, occupation or street and the generally low editorial quality made it quite hard to obtain a reliable result"

As it is hard to realize, which problems - beside the very large number of addresses - we had to face during the editing of the listings, let me enclose (for Ehpes released in Ehpes.com Blog) just two - out of 242 - pages. Please have a look and comprehend yourself:

1. The quality of the available copies (on the margins) is very poor. However, I think we tracked back most of the addresses, as we could refer to prior directories.

2. Many names were affected by the epidemically Romanization. A good example is Coifman, a Yiddish/Romanian variant for Kaufmann, the spelling, that has been used before. But names as Cleiderman, Clein, Cleiner, Cleitman, Cleiman, Clemens, Clopfner, Cluger, Cuaster, Coffler, Cofman, Cogan, Cohan, Cohn, Cohut, etc., have been affected as well.

3. The Romanian editors were not very familiar with the alphabet. Cuaster, Cuiarschi and Cuis are located between Cmitichievici and Cobeli. There are many other examples for alphabetical disorder on this two pages.

4. Other ethnic groups are affected too. Cmitichievici reads most probably Smitichievici.

5. The Romanian editors listed for example Ciutac, Ciuvic Stefan, but Ciuvic Stefan is most probably not the given name for Ciutac, but an independent person. Now nobody knows, whether the name of the person listed below is Ciuvic or Ciutac.

6. As per the directory, Captain Felix Cocynschi lived on Zalojetchi street no. 4, but in fact it was in 1936 str. Basarabiei (see Street Index).

7. Finally - nobody is perfect - we omitted Petru Ciubotariu, carpenter, living str. Banatului 1 b. Sorry!

So, dear friends and researchers, we had to decide between releasing or not the Czernowitz Directory for the year 1936. We believe, that it is however - despite all restrictions - a valuable data source, as it is - as far as is known - the very last directory edition for Czernowitz before WW2.

We understand and regret possible confusions, but hope the data are nevertheless useful for you.

Warmest wishes!
