Thank you for calling attention to the video of Ohlendorf's trial. The
following excerpt from my Memoir adds a personal footnote to that event.
During a short visit to Israel last year, I had the pleasure of listening to
your interesting lecture at the Askara for the victims from the Bukowina.

On the 4th of July, the first German and Romanian troops entered Czernowitz
and Romanian and German swastika flags started to appear on many houses.
There was looting in the city, several hundred Jews were killed by Germans
and Romanians, the magnificent Temple was set on fire by German troops,
reportedly by members of SS Einsatzgruppe D, who then proceeded to murder
the Chief Rabbi Dr. Abraham Mark and 400 leading Jewish citizens. Huge
banners of the SS appeared on the once elegant hotel, the Schwarzer Adler,
where the command of the notorious Einsatzgruppe D was quartered. This unit,
under the command of SS General Otto Ohlendorf participated in the mass
murder of hundreds of thousands Jews in the USSR in 1941 and 1942. He was
tried by an American military tribunal at Nuremberg, sentenced to death and
hanged in 1951. (I attended his trial in Nuremberg in 1946 and only then did
I learn of his presence and murderous activities in my city during that July
of 1941.)
