Gaby, Czernowitzers,

In Kecskemet, Hungary, there was a similar situation of a large
impressive Temple in the center of town. Few Jews remained after the
War, and the decaying building was taken over by the town and turned
into a conference center and museum (Sciences and Technology). I was
there in 1998 and also found plaques at the entrance giving the short
story of the fate of the Jewish community. The restoration preserved
many of the nice architectural features of this great synagogue. See:

I don't know whom to contact, but it would be good to know more about
how this tasteful restoration was accomplished. We could learn a
great deal by examining such projects to see how they were funded and
what steps were necessary to reach the final goal. Finding such a
respectful use for the historic Temple helps to assure that it won't
decay and deteriorate, as likely if vacant.

Chag Sameach, Happy Passover all,

Bruce
