Where the Friedhofgasse , now Zelenaya, leaves the Russischegass
there was a market : the Russischer Markt we called it .
There were some stands but most of the trade was done at street level.
You put a rug on the ground and exposed your goods.
A newspaper would also do. What would you sell ? Anything at all.
Jews sold all their households - all that moved ,pots ,cutlery,
     clothes.
Soon there was nothing to sell and there was no end to the war.
When the Russians came , with the Red Army there also came the
war invalids. Soldiers who lost their legs or arms or both .
They were moving on boards on wheels and found their place
at the market selling"makhorka" that is russian black tobacco.
Makhorka trade was forbidden ( I cant tell you why).
So every now and then the Militia would round up the market
     and confiscate the tobacco.
The invalids wouldn't take it and would move to the center of
    Russischegass, stopping the trafic.
As this was a main road , the militia tried to remove the protesters.
To no avail : "My voievaly !" (We have fought !) they shouted and
     the militia was helpless.
After a long time they brought down some high- ranking officer
who negotiated and settled the matter.

The same scenario was repeated next day.

Never a dull moment on the Russischegass !
     Hardy
