The school building that Hardy is referring to is on the left side of the
street, on the far corner of the side-street.
I believe that this was the secondary school that my mother Erica attended
about 1934-6, Liceul de fete "Oltea Doamna". The headmistress was Dr Silvia
Balan. In about 1936, the school moved to a larger building in Str Stefan
cel Mare, near the Volksgarten. Erica wrote of the school:
"All instruction was in Romanian. German or any other of the local
languages was totally banned; there were severe penalties for anyone caught
using them. This was part of the Romanianisation policy, but was also
reinforced by the intense pride the Romanians took in their language, which
is closer to Latin than either Italian or Spanish. The Romanian nobility
had been Francophiles for generations. Because of this, the curriculum had
a strong ingredient of French language, history and geography. Later on, at
school in the French part of Switzerland, I easily kept up with French girls
older than myself in language and knowledge of the French classics."
"So in addition to Yiddish and German culture, the youth of Czernowitz, or
at least some of us, had a solid grounding in French culture. Educational
standards in Mathematics, Latin, etc. were high. When I came to England in
1938, my only difficulty was an initial lack of the English language."
The school is now the Romanian school in Chernivtsi. I visited the school
during the Reunion in 2006. The headmaster was most hospitable, and showed
me around. He told me that the present Romanian school was the third school
to occupy this building since the War. He knew nothing of the pre-war
history of the building. However, he had heard of Dr Balan.
Incidentally, the Meislerschule (my mother's primary school) was further
down the street, also on the left.
