Dear Anny,
Whatever I did to have Traian Popovici remembered as a saver of thousands
of Czernowitz Jews, I did, because I personally am immensely grateful to
him, because I never heard anyone say a bad word about him before or after
you wrote about his wife and your dog, because institutions and people I
respect and trust asserted that his actions were honorable and because I
believe that gratitude is more important than keeping score and remembering
evil done to us.
In my opinion THERE ARE NO SAINTS. Therefore Popovici could not be one.
We are all fallible, but some of us, whether Romanians, Ukrainians, Jews or
Hottentots, try to be decent, honest and compassionate people.
I do know lots of people who got the Popovici authorization in 1941, many of
them members of this list and you are the only one, who has accused Popovici
or his wife of extortion in order to get the permit to remain in Czernowitz.
In a court of law, your story would be considered "hearsay"; you are telling
us what your mother told you.
I cannot prove your story wrong, nor do you have any corroboration that it
is true. So let's stop the discussion about the motives for Popovici's
actions.
