Hi Anny! I had slightly different versions. First: after eine alte Frau
kocht Speck came "eins zwei drei und Du bist weg" and and another ruder
version which substituted another rhyming word for "weg"...it started with
the letter D...but maybe only boys used that variation considering the fact
that all our Czernowitz girls were ever so ladylike!!! Cornel

Dear all,
Another Rhyme I remember
Eins zwei drei vier funf sechs sieben
eine alte Frau kocht Rueben
eine alte Frau ksocht Speck
Ich oder du musst weg (double ss we used to write "ein scharfes S")
Der Herr von Hagen ...... was called the "a" rhyme by my family the "r" one
was
Drei un dreissig Russische Reiter ritten ueber die Russische Bruecke (there
might be some more which I don't remember.
Gruesome stories were most of Grimm's Maerchen but another book (can't
remember by whom) Ruebezahl. He lived in the Schwartzwald and when he
called the mountains shook (we had an American neighbour with such a voice
when he called one of his 5 children home!!)
But lovely girl stories like Bibi and all Johanna Spiri's Heidi books, and
of course Erich Kaestner !!! I loved them all and like Harry Potter they
went round and round my circle of friends.
My God, you certainly bring back memories!!
Regards, anny
