[Cz-L] Gregor Von Rezzori

Stimulated by the recent email from Jessica Falikman Attiyeh, I would like
to add a few comments about the work of the late Gregor Von Rezzori. I have
read and re-read with pleasure his descriptions of life in Czernowitz,
including in addition to the 2 works mentioned, his novel, The Hussar (Ein
Hermelin in Tschernopol) and The Death of My Brother Abel. When his work
began to appear some decades ago, there was a great deal of debate amongst
people from Czernowitz. There was a great deal of criticism and he was
often accused of anti-Semitism. His attitude however was quite typical of
what one might expect in certain strata of Czernowitz society and he was
certainly quite familiar with the behaviour and characteristics of our
co-nationals. This type of criticism is still in the back of my mind, but
it has not diminished my enjoyment of his work. At any rate, "De mortuis
nisi bonum".
