One early morning in 1946 , we heard tank rumble down the Russischegasse.
In minutes we were there to find out the facts.
An endless column of T-34 tanks was coming from Horecea, crossing the
rail bridge and then, doing a left turn, into the Neueweltgasse .
This left turn soon uprooted the pavement and soon a hillock
of cobble stones formed at the intersection.
Curious people started asking questions.
The soldiers in the tanks when asked what was going on said:
"Turtzya " that is Turkey in Russian.
This was picked up by by-standers and brought into town where the IPA
(Yiddshe Plotke Agentur ) picked up the information and distributed it
through the streets. From mouth to ear the news went:
" The Russian are attacking Turkey".
" Because of the Dardanelles !" commented Yossel from the first
floor.
"All was fixed at Yalta with Churchill " added Schloyme who knew
better.
The next day all was over.
The cobble stones at the Neueweltgasse remained uprooted
for a long time.
As a reminder of the Turkish war.
