Wishing all a Healthy and Happy New Year,

There are two recent postings that I am interested in following up upon.

1. Someone mentioned the refurbishing of the monument to the K. K.
Infanterie-regiments NR. 41.  My great grand-uncle, for whom I was
named, made it to the rank of Captain in that unit and served
valiantly for Franz Josef. Does anyone know if the City fathers plan
to put names on the monument, as is now done to raise monies for a
project?  Are there any of you who have interest and knowledge of the
41st, outside of those who so graciously wrote to me about my families
connection to the 41st?  From what I understand this was a unique unit
which had numerous Jews volunteering to serve in the army verses
conscription.

2. This brings me to the posting asking questions about life in
Czernowitz from the 1860's to the turn of the century. I, also have
questions on this period. When did the first train station open?
When was the city's first telephone installed? When were the street
cobble stoned? Are there any book available in English which might
address these types of questions?

I am writing our family history in a narrative form and want to
incorporate the milieu of the time.

With fond memories of our trip with this group in 2006 to Czernowitz,

Yours,

Joe and Linda Poras
