Mimi...you and Annie are both right to an extent. These are called loan
words, but do not affect the basic language spoken. For example.in Australia
you can say"what's that doover??"meaning what kind of thing is it...and
doover is derived from the Australian military in Palestine, from the Hebrew
"davar"....and this does not imply that the basic language is not English.
Pierogi is panslavic..but Pirogen is also used in parts of Germany, whereas
in Ruthenian the name is "vareniki". I too still call it a trapatchka, but I
confess my ignorance...what are Kiczmeh and Smarkate???? Cornel

Anny,
Do you know the words:
Trapatczka, Czainik, Kiczmeh, Smarkate? Did you use them or the German
equivalent?
Did you ever go shopping at the market on the Austriaplatz?
If you did, in what language did you speak to the peasants?
Hoch-Deutsch?
Our maid was named Annetza, she was Ruthenian.
Our washerwoman was named Afia, she was Polish, but spoke Yiddish.
My nursemaid was Freulein Mitzi, she was German, but she was fired, because
she force-fed me.
The cook was named Jenny, she was Jewish and spoke Yiddish mixed with Germa=
n
and Ruthenian.
She made =B3Hollishkes=B2 and not Gefultes Kraut, =B3Pirogen=B2 - not
Teig-Tscherl.
Mimi
