Hardy and all participants in this discussion
The point I was trying to make, is that, while it is known that there were
Jews living in Czernowitz during the time it was ruled by the Turks, there
is no evidence that these Jews remained in Czernowitz when it became part of
the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They may all have fled the area during the
Russo-Turkish war, just prior to the annexation of Czernowitz by the
Austrians.
I doubt that anyone of us can prove definitely whether the descendants of
the Turkish Jews, did, or did not, live in Czernowitz after 1850.
But there is no doubt, that the Czernowitz Jewish population grew
tremendously after the city became part of the Austrian Empire. More
importantly, the character of the city, the cultural life of its Jewish
population, the essence of what we consider to be Czernowitz, owes no debt
to Moldavian princes, Turkish rulers or their Jewish subjects.
Austrian, relatively benign rule, the Chassidic movement, the Haskala,
Anti-Semitism in Russia and Poland, Assimilation and Zionism played a far
greater role in shaping the Culture and way of life of Czernowitz Jews, than
anything which happened previous to 1775.
I also think that Rabbi Lazar Igel (1825-1892), who became rabbi at
Czernowitz in 1850 had a tremendous influence on both the city in general
and on the Jewish community in particular.
With this, I would like to withdraw from any further discussions about the
roots of Jewish Czernowitz.
