Paul,

Smetana is the Russian or Ukrainian word for sour cream. In Yiddish they said
Smetene and we, the Cernowitzer, called it Schmetten.(Schmettentorte)

I believe that sweet cream is called "KREM" in Yiddish.

We ate these "Walderdbeeren" with sour cream and sugar. Sometimes we ate them
with sweet cream, which I don't remember what we called it in Czernowitzer
Deutsch. Suesser Rahm? Suesse Sahne? Pehaps just simply suesser Schmetten?

        Happy New year to all,

        Ruth

The picture of these strawberries brought back lots of fond memories.
