The Yiddish word is "Shmeteneh". Rahm or süßer Rahm is the cream at the top
of the milk, which can be used as is or beaten, to make butter or whipped
cream. Whipped cream we called in Czernowitz "Schlagsahne".
Strange to think that my family kept a cow, even though we lived in
Czernowitz itself. In 1940 when the Russians came, we had to move out of our
house, so as not to be tagged "Burjui" (Bourgeois). We moved to the
Blumengasse, further south from the center and because our garden was not
large enough, kept the cow at the neighbors garden and shed, across the
street. I remember beating the cream in a wooden tall vessel in order to
make butter. The neighbors' name was Schattner and they had a teenage
daughter who would make me "Krenzschen" of "Butterblümchen und
Gänseblümchen".
Did any of you know the Schattner family, specifically their daughter, who
was probably born around 1925?
