The only way to resolve the question as to whether the star of David was
used as a design element or as a sign of friendship between the Metropolitan
of the Orthodox church and the chief rabbi, is to look at orthodox churches
built in other cities at about the same time, or at other churches designed
by the same architect, who designed the "Residenz".
Even though the star of David is a design element in Moslem architecture and
possibly even in Christian buildings, by the late 19th century, it was well
recognized as a Jewish symbol.
During the period from the end of WW1 to 1940, which admittedly is a long
time after the Residenz was built, the head of the Ruthenian party in
Czernowitz was Dr. Alexis Zaloziecki, considered the best physician in town
and an enlightened and cultured man. Under his leadership the Ruthenian
community and the Jewish community had excellent relations and both
communities voted against the annexation to Romania. Therefore it is not so
unlikely that the star of David was used intentionally in the decoration of
the "Residenz".
