I do not know about the winter of 1928, but during the winter of 1940, the
temperature in Czernowitz went down to minus 40, which is the same in
degrees Farenheit or Celsius and the joke was that the Russians had brought
the cold with them from Siberia.

Czernowitz is on the same latitude as Montreal, so the winters would be
similar. But there was no insulated glass and only rarely central heating.
