Czernowitzers…
Yesterday I reported on the "Teenager Communists and the Torture" in Czernowitz. Today I'm going to report on Heinrich Goldmann, the editor in charge for the serial story column of "Der Tag - The Day", but first of all I would like to express my gartitude to SILVIU LANDMAN, who recently joined our Discussion Group.
Dr. Silviu Landman, a retired radiologist, living in the New York area, is the nephew of Heinrich Goldmann and related to Edith Silbermann as well. Thanks to Silviu, I got pictures of Heinrich Goldmann and the right hints in order to complete his biography.
Heinrich Goldmann, in 1932 only 23 years old, was an outstanding journalist and - by the side of the editor Arnold Schwarz - irreplaceable for "Der Tag - The Day" (http://czernowitzdaily.blogspot.com/). He was the driving force for this newspaper and the one, who opposed the official policy of violent persecution and humiliation of the so-called "communists". They were in fact students, teenagers, students, coming from a good home, in the majority of cases a Jewish one, protesting against the virulent anti-Semitism and awaking fascism in Romania during the Interwar period.
Have a look at the post, which I released to our Ehpes.com Blog and admire Heinrich Goldmann, who stepped into the lion's den by interviewing the Police Quaestor = Police Superintendent of Czernowitz.

The second article from "tomorrow's" edition [i.e. 04.12.1932/2010] of "Der Tag - The Day", p. 2, headed "Das Gelächter - The Laughter", relates to the ridiculous trial date, as reported yesterday.
Silviu Landman draw my attention to Edith Silbermann, who was a close friend of Paul Celan, a famous author, translator, editor of Alfred Kittner's memoirs, theater actress, etc. Many fellow members of our group are of course familiar with Edith's oeuvre. Edith deceased in 2008 in Düsseldorf, but she left us posthumously a legacy of two important books, edited by her niece Amy-Diana Colin, Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.german.pitt.edu/people/colin.php). The first book
Paul Celan - Edith Silbermann - Zeugnisse einer Freundschaft [Paul Celan - Edith Silbermann - Testimonies of a Friendship] has just been released, the second one
Czernowitz, Stadt der Dichter - Geschichte einer jüdischen Familie aus der Bukowina [Czernowitz, City of Poets - History of a Jewish Family from Bukovina]
is going to be published in March 2011 and is extremly promising, as the first book acts as an appetizer. From there we learn - confirmed by Silviu Landman - that Heinrich Goldmann survived WW2, moved via Vienna to Frankfurt am Main and became a famous journalist, writing for the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)", using as pseudonyms Heinrich Wassermann, Felix Herbert, Pierre, Peter Trauschau. He deceased in Frankfurt on 07.05.1982.
This is my personal tribute to Heinrich Goldmann, but I'm confident that it is on behalf of all - now and then - readers of "Der Tag - The Day" as well.
