Re: [Cz-L] Songs of woe.

After listening to the Stein, Stein video, I decided to type in Czernowitz
to see what else is appearing on UTUBE about Czernowitz.

Lo and behold, someone has taken many of the photographs on the EPHES site,
including many of my mother's photos and put it together with other photos
into a slide show. The caption reads: "Slideshow of old photographs of
people, who lived in the city of Czernowitz a long time ago." The comments
are interesting.

The only possessions my mother and grandmother were able to save from their
life in Czernowitz were their photographs. My mother carried her box of
photographs from place to place as they were forced to relocate within the
city. They then traveled to Israel and then to the United States, always in
the same box. The box has now become as special to my children who ask my
mother the same questions that I asked. Yes I scanned most of them, but made
sure they made it back to the box. These photographs were my only way of
knowing what my mother's life was like as a child and young adult. Without
them so many of her memories would have been lost. I starred at them for
hours and hours growing up, asking her over and over again to tell me about
each person and place. So much so that when I went to Czernowitz and walked
the streets, I was able to recognize places that I had never been! When I
walked over the Turkish bridge for the first time on my way to see the
Roemerbad, I recognized it from a picture her friend had taken on her 13th
birthday with her first camera. The year was 1938. The iron work on the
bridge is exactly the same.

In so many ways I am happy to be able to share these photos of my mother and
grandparents and their friends with the world.

Yet, this does bring up the curious issue of intellectual property on the
internet. Who knows where else our photos have been used. When we post our
material to the website for the world to see, does that mean we don't own
the intellectual property anymore?
