Roberta,
I don't think that the composer of Hava Nagila is known, the melody
may have been imported to Sadigora from elsewhere and became popular
among Sadigerer hasidim. For a background information on them you may
want to talk to Professor David Assaf (Department of Jewish History,
Tel-Aviv University), perhaps the greatest authority on the Sadigerer
court, the author of "Regal Way - The Life and Times of Rabbi Israel
of Ruzhin" (Stanford University Press, 2002). A very nice collection
of different (and some rare) recordings of Hava Nagila can be found in

Idelsohn's manuscripts, letters, etc.) from the Jewish Music Research
