Hi,
At Herrengasse, str.Jancu Flondor No.6 was a shop with feathers. The owner
was Family Fang, they had also in the "Bahnhofstrasse" a factory, with
mashines which did from feather down, they did also quilt cover with
downs"Daunendecke", you could order after a catalogue the pattern...Sali
Fang, the daughter of the family, was my firend and cklassmate 8 years and
she took me to the factory to show me how these downvover are done
(quilt)..in the cellar of the factory was a champignons-garden, there were
growing the small mushrooms in the earth and my friend Sali gave me some for
showing to my mother..these mushrooms were for export, she told me...The
parents of my friend were deported to Siberia, she was hidden and
escaped...I met her once in Bukarest, than in Israel, she died 4 years ago.
(The name Fang is not a Bukowinian name, she told me that her grandfather
came from Charbin, therefor the chinese name)
Best regards Hedwig

My great-grandfather, Chaim Hersch Siederer, made quilts and bedcovers as
his trade in Czernowitz. He would have been doing this from mid-1880s to
his death from the flu epidemic in 1917 or 1918.

His youngest son, Koloman (Kubi) picked up this trade and ran a similar
business in Vienna before WW2. Kubi escaped eventually to New York where he
took up the trade there. My cousins remember him making quilts in the early
1950s.

My grandfather, Moritz Siederer, trained as a hairdresser and chiropodist at
the Czernowitz technical college. Somewhere in the family papers, we have
his diploma in hairdressing, chiropody and wigmaking. He emigrated to
London in 1908, aged 21, and was a hairdresser and chiropodist all his life.
Another brother, Ignatz, was also a hairdresser. At some stage he operated
as such in Vienna, and picked it up again when he eventually escaped to
London.
