Stephen...
Welcome as a new fellow member to our group; I'm happy you signed in! I'm inviting our "old-timers" to assist Stephen in scheduling his (first) Bukovina/Transnistria journey. Let me put in my two cents:
I deeply encourage you, not to miss out L'viv, an charming and amazing city and - in addition - to schedule a stop over for a day or two in Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislau), located between L'viv and Czernowitz, as it is definitely worth seeing. Czernowitz is for sure very attractive, but the places of interest (must-do's: Jewish Cemetery, Jewish Museum, University, Theatre, Herrengasse, etc.) are somehow limited to a program of several days.
Accomodation:
L'viv - Hotel Opera (http://www.lviv-life.com/sleep/hotels_details/50-Hotel_Opera) - perfect location
L'viv - Citadel Inn Hotel & Resort (http://www.citadel-inn.com.ua/en/golovna.html) - very good rooms and excellent cuisine
Ivano-Frankivsk - Museum Hotel Pid Templem (http://www.tempel.if.ua/) - Jewish, brand new and excellent, bookable by HRS
Czernowitz - Hotel Magnat Lux (http://www.magnat-lux.cv.ukrtel.net/index.html) - small, no English website, but best in town
Restaurant:
Czernowitz - Knaus (http://www.knaus.com.ua/index.php?page=about_resturant) - Ukrainian, German, International cuisine
Guides:
Natascha Maslich (English)

I've experienced all the above addresses and I'm confident, these hints could be useful to you. I know Nadia very well and as Nadia recommended Natascha to me I haven't any doubt regarding their abilities. So, just enjoy Czernowitz.
Best wishes!
P.S.: Have a look into my Edgar Hauster Blog (http://hauster.blogspot.com/2010/05/iwano-frankiwsk-iwano-frankowsk.html) and you'll find a few pictures from Ivano-Frankivsk and the Museumhotel Pid Templem as well. As you may see, it's located wall to wall with the Synagogue in the heart of the city, but very quite, as it's an restricted area.

However, I need advice particularly on how to safely travel from Lvov, where to stay, and how to find a guide in Czernowitz. I would consider hiring a driver if the cost would not be excessive.
