I too remember the same journey as the one of Mimis. I remember that we received
after a wait the "Propuska" frome the Milizia
in the Franzosgasse. We also waited at Tereblesti to cross the border at Siret.
It was my mother , my sister Bella and myself my father crossed some time
earlier before the border opened officially. As for my brothers we did not know
where and how they were. The were
taken to a quarry as slave labour and we had no news. 2 fled as soon as the war
ended and made ilegal alia to Israel and one waited in Bukarest. We met my
father in Siret and with other Czernowitzer a truck was hired to continue
without delay to distance ourselves frome the border. I think our first stop was
Bacau and after thet Bukarest. Everything of value was taken and as children we
were not spared
the crossing was turmoil and uncertainties as we saw some people being bundled
up on trucks to return to Czernowitz

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] Waiting to get out of there.
Dear all, Leo and I describe this period in some detail in Ghosts of Home. In
order to leave in 1945, people had to have papers proving they were from
Southern Bukowina or other areas of Romania. My parents managed to acquire some
valid papers belonging to a family who had been killed in Transnistria. When
they claimed the passes allowing them to cross the Romanian border, they had to
prove these false identities, all this under severe risk. They got out via
Siret, but the rest of the family stayed until 1946. In the book, we speculate
why the Soviets opened the borders in 46. We also tell the story of some other
families's departures. See also the memoirs of Pearl Fichman, Hedwig Brenner and
my father Carl Hirsch (available on www.ghostsofhome.com).
Thank you , MImi, for collecting these accounts which give so much depth and
texture to this very confused period.
Marianne
