The Jews of Czernowitz enjoyed a unique position after the
Habsburg takeover.
The Rumanians and Ukrainians had national aspirations
and opposed the Austrians.
All what the Jews wanted was to be left in peace.
They therefore embraced the Habsburg state.
Many more reasons why the Western German language monarchy
had its advantages.
The Jews paid back by allegiance and assimilation.
They grew Habsburg mustaches and wore monocles.
