When I started to liquidate my old archive, I found a bio of one of my
artists, with roots in Czernowitz. it is very interesting what she wrote:
Stella Waitzkin (1920-2002):
AS far as I can remember, I have been told about the olden days. My family
lived in a little village called Czernowitz, part of the larger place called
Buchovina which, before World War l devided the territories as Eastern
Europe and Austria.
In thhose days, peasant women digging potatoes gave birth in the fields. My
grandmother was such a peasant. My freat-grandfather was a religious Jew and
a scholar. Books were treasured in his house as they are in mine
However. the way in which words are used, both verbal and written are
frustrating to me.they are to easy manipulated. That is one of the reasons
why I avoid using them in my books...

Czernowitzers...

Hardy drew my attention to an inscription on the Czernowitz Great Synagogue.
Hardy mentioned: "I look at your video clips. Impressive job. In the Alte
Shil clip I miss this inscription. Probably on a back wall. It says :
created in 5559 which is 1794 AD. The Shil was finished much later but
founded 1794. So says the wall." - Thank you, Hardy, I didn't know about
this inscription yet, but I included a picture of it to my slide show and
replaced the initial video clip by a new one, now available at:
